WIP or Looking ahead

Work.In.Progress.

Well, I'm putting my blog feed on indefinite halt while I pursue other types of work.
For continuity's sake I'll leave in a few select posts from the past years.

Some insight: I'm developing a new character creation workflow for game production.

The going is slow right now, for a variety of reasons, but once I manage to create some new 3D content I'll make sure to post it here :)

Isolation Game Jam 2014!

Last week I had the pleasure to participate in the first ever Isolation Game Jam, which took place in the "young", volcanic island country of Iceland!

Besides having been a great game jam experience, it was also one of the most unique and fun travel experiences I've had as well :)

The jam was hosted by overall swell dude Jóhannes G. Þorsteinsson on a farm called Kollafoss. Situated out in the middle of nowhere on a grassy plain strewn with old rocks, surrounded by mountains and glaciers, it was a setting perfectly fitted for developing games in seclusion with a bunch of cool people brave enough to live without internet access far from civilization ;)

The jam lasted for five days, during which time I took part in creating a little game called "Active Mike". The game is a linear, first-person puzzle-type game made in Unity where you interact with the environment using your voice. You can check out the game through the link at the bottom.

As a whole the game jam was well worth the time and I sure had a blast hanging out with everyone at the farm during my first ever stay in Iceland. Thanks to everyone who participated, and I look forward to Isolation Game Jam 2015!

Aziz, lights!

In last week's post I said I'd be playing with lighting, so I've been playing with lighting :p

Here's a HDRI dome light setup for outdoor environments, showcasing different lighting conditions during a day.
Next up in this arch viz process will be materials. We'll see how that turns out!

Also I'm working on a new character that I'll show off later on as well.

peace!

Down on the corner!

Heya!

So I'm doing more experiments with good ol' Vray, trying to find more interesting ways to do outdoor renders. At the moment I'm trying to learn some new HDRI lighting methods.

Down here's a simple example scene, the first I plan on using in these experiments.

All is polymodeled so it's unrealistically clean as you'd expect. Not sure if I'll do a detail pass in Zbrush, but we'll see ;)

Next time I'll share the results of my HDRI tests.

peace!

Art Dump!

Resurrection!
I'm back to take a dump on the internet. Sketches, speeds and such.

Enjoy!

2013: Down with the sickness, or starting back up!

First post of 2013!
I had a great start to the new year, and I hope you did too!

I've caught a nasty cold, but thankfully one can do CG in bed :)

I started on this little alien-type, four-armed dude last year, but had to redo him during the holidays. It took about 1,5 weeks to "finish" the guy. I think he turned out better this time around though. I made him as part of a school mini-project.

I still consider him a wip but the work was good enough for school at least. Enjoy!

Still Alive and Kickin' or Undead and Happily Unaware!

Hey! So I'm back from the dead with another update!

Thanks to Chris for reminding me that I do still have a blog, and that there still might be couple of people checking it out from time to time. I hope I haven't lost too many of you cool strangers who cheered me on back in July. The world sure needs more of you, and from now on I'll try to be my own motivator :)

Now, for the sake of comfort and to keep posts coming at a somewhat steady rate, I'll just stick to doing a single monthly update. That should be a manageable routine!

So, here are a few new pics for you to check out:

This first guy is a base for a more elaborate game character. Yup.

Next is a discontinued ecorché-project I did in september. I noodled over details too much and lost interest, so I'll start over once I have more time after christmas. The phalanges were borrowed from Ryan K!

For those who were curious about what happened to the ol' zomb, here he is. Maybe one day I'll turn him into a proper conceptual character.

Stay tuned for more stuff in January!

"Hard work, work!"

"The Devil's workshop" or "Lowpolys and Zombies!"

Small update!

Soon the summer vacation will be over, so last week I decided to take a little break before school time is upon me once again. It's important to take a breather every now and again.

But you know what they say about the idle hands, right?
So I just couldn't stay away from starting one tiny project during my time off!

I found out that it's possible to create your own in-game content for the upcoming battle arena game DOTA 2. I used this great chance to freshen up on my lowpoly skills.

I have to admit, my lowpoly workflow isn't as strong as it could be, so this was a really good exercise. I recommend checking out the DOTA 2 Workshop!

I created a simple weapon model for this character, Sven:

Now I'm starting on a new project that I'll be updating in the blog, where I'll apply some of the tech and knowledge I learned from last months workshops.

I plan on giving this old head a body and turning him into a zombie!

Stay tuned!

A Chronological Record of My Artistic Development

Welcome visitor!

My name is Karl Gustafson Lorant, and I'm a computer graphics artist from Sweden. I work primarily with digital media, and I specialize in 3D modeling and sculpting for video games. I also dabble in 2D concept painting and sketching from time to time.

I'm deeply passionate about my work, in a very literal sense. I truly love it, and I can't think of any other line of work that I would enjoy more.
My ambition is to reach my full potential as an artist and find my place among the many great developers in the global gaming industry.

I plan to use this blog as a platform where I can chronicle my continued development as a CG artist; both as a sculptor and draftsman.

Feel free to contact me anytime! Also, any honest artistic critique is welcome and greatly appreciated!

Now!
To set this blog off right, I'm gonna share a small selection of character concept thumbs I'm working on for a side project. Enjoy!

I hope you'll drop by again to check out my progress!

Thank you.
